Presión arterial
Los estudios en animales demuestran que los extractos de hoja de olivo provocan una disminución significativa de la presión arterial elevada. Es sorprendente que estos efectos sean evidentes cuando la suplementación se produce antes o después de que los animales desarrollen hipertensión. Esto significa que los extractos tienen la capacidad de prevenir y tratar la hipertensión arterial.
El descenso de la presión arterial va acompañado de una reducción de la presión en el ventrículo izquierdo del corazón. Esto da lugar a una mejora del flujo sanguíneo hacia los vasos coronarios del propio corazón. Otros estudios en humanos demuestran la capacidad de los extractos de hoja de olivo para reducir significativamente las mediciones de la presión arterial.
Estudio de gemelos
Un estudio especialmente fascinante se llevó a cabo entre gemelos idénticos con hipertensión (presión arterial en el rango de 120-139 mmHg sobre 80-89 mmHg). Los estudios de gemelos idénticos eliminan prácticamente las variaciones genéticas que pueden afectar a los resultados del estudio.
Después de 8 semanas, los receptores de placebo no mostraron ningún cambio en la presión arterial con respecto a la línea de base, pero los pacientes suplementados con 1.000 mg/día de extracto de hoja de olivo redujeron sus presiones en una media de 11 mmHg sistólica y 4 mmHg diastólica. Los pacientes suplementados experimentaron reducciones significativas del colesterol LDL.
En un estudio en humanos se comparó el extracto de hoja de olivo con el captopril, uno de los fármacos convencionales utilizados para tratar la hipertensión. En este estudio, los pacientes con lo que ahora se considera hipertensión en fase 2 (140-159 mmHg sobre 90-99 mmHg) tomaron 500 mg de extracto de hoja de olivo dos veces al día o 12,5 mg de captopril dos veces al día, que se aumentaron según las necesidades hasta 25 mg dos veces al día.
Tratamiento de 8 semanas
Tras 8 semanas de tratamiento, ambos grupos experimentaron un descenso de la presión arterial media respecto a la inicial (11,5 y 13,7 mmHg de sistólica; 4,8 y 6,4 mm Hg de diastólica, respectivamente), sin que hubiera diferencias significativas entre los dos grupos. En otras palabras, el extracto de hoja de olivo funcionó tan bien como el medicamento recetado. Un examen más detallado en el laboratorio revela la razón de esta equivalencia.
Aunque utilizan mecanismos de acción diferentes (la oleuropeína actúa como un bloqueador natural de los canales de calcio y el captopril es un conocido inhibidor de la ECA), tanto la oleuropeína como el captopril actúan en el interior de la vasculatura para disminuir la tensión de las paredes de los vasos sanguíneos y promover el ensanchamiento de los mismos (vasodilatación), reduciendo en última instancia la presión arterial.
